White wine cookies – 100% vegan recipe!

door Linda Terrizzi

These delicious white wine cookies are completely vegan! You make them in no time with very few ingredients.

You guessed it: these cookies are made with a good amount of white wine. In addition, we do not use butter or other dairy products, but oil. Also, no egg is involved in the recipe, so these tasty cookies are suitable for vegans*.

I got the recipe from Linda's uncle. It is a recipe well known in some parts of Italy. They are called "Ciambelle al vino" there. That literally means "water bracelets with wine". the name naturally refers to the fun, round shape. They look like mini donuts!

We made them together for the first time on holiday, under the direction of 'Zio Bruno' of course. The result was immediately excellent. These are such easy cookies… but delicious!

Friendship bread

The taste is a bit like the friendship bread you used to make with dough that you got from a classmate. You then had to 'feed' the dough with milk and flour for 10 days and then you could bake the bread. The rest of the dough you could pass on to others… like a kind of tasty chain letter.

In the end, the whole class had already had the bread at home a few times and no one could be found to report it. (tell me I'm not alone with this memory?)

Because the biscuits are nice and sweet and the wine is naturally fermented, the taste matches the friendship bread.

This recipe makes about 25-30 cookies.

*If you are very puristic, you should pay attention to which wine you use. Some wine brands use egg or gelatin to filter the wine before it goes into the bottle.

  • 500 gr wheat flour
  • 250 gr granulated sugar (+ extra, to decorate)
  • 125 ml sunflower oil
  • 125 ml of white wine
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • a pinch of salt

White wine biscuit preparation:

Take a large bowl and mix the oil with the wine.

Then also add the granulated sugar and the salt.

Finally add the flour and baking powder and knead into a smooth dough.

Make a nice ball of the dough and let it rest in the bowl (covered with plastic wrap) for about 30 minutes.

Now preheat the oven to 180 degrees and line a baking tray with baking paper.

Always take a scoop of dough, the size of a small walnut.

Now roll out the ball between your hands into a 'snake' of about 15 centimeters.

Then fold the ends of the 'snake' together, so that you get a circle.

Put a bowl with some sugar and push each cookie in there.

Then place the cookies on the baking tray. Leave some space between the cookies!

Bake the white wine biscuits for about 15-18 minutes and until golden brown.

TIP:  You can store the cookies in an airtight box or container for about a week.
