Dushi di tamarein – Tamarind candy

door Linda Terrizzi

Dushi di tamarein is a traditional Antillean candy made from Tamarind. Most Antillean sweets are made with sugar, milk, nuts or a combination thereof. Yet the beloved tamarind also finds itself among the sweet treats.

This freshly sour candy reminds the Dutch most of the brightly colored sour mats from the supermarket. The tamarind itself is quite sour, but the sugar provides an excellent balance.

Not only is this version of tamarind much more natural, it is also ten times more flavorful!

The recipe is very easy, so it is also ideal to make with children.

Ingredients:

  • 500 gr tamarind
  • 300 gr icing sugar
  • 100 gr granulated sugar
  • 200 ml water

Preparation of dushi di tamarein:

Break the tamarind into pieces and then boil it with the water. Make sure that all seeds are removed.

Cook the pieces of tamarind until dissolved. When you get a thick, smooth substance, then mix the powdered sugar into the tamarind.

Then let the mixture cool and roll into balls.

Now roll the balls one by one through the granulated sugar and place them on a baking tray lined with baking paper.

Let the dushi di tamarein stiffen for another half an hour before serving.

Enjoy!

Tip: You can store the candies in an airtight box for about a week. Make sure you add some extra granulated sugar to prevent sticking.

Alternative spelling: kos dushi di tamarein, dulce de tamarindo, tamarind candy
