Witch fingers cookies for Halloween

Witch fingers made of biscuit… they look scary don't they? Just like real, with that almond as 'nail'! They are indispensable for Halloween (or any other time you want to get spooked). Give your guests a good scare… and then, of course, feast! This recipe makes about 25 cookies.

TIP: For a real Antillean twist, make these cookies from the recipe for the traditional 'letter di peanut'!


For the dough:

  • 400 gr wheat flour
  • 200 gr icing sugar
  • a cap of vanilla essence
  • a cap of almond essence
  • 200 gr unsalted butter
  • 1 egg, large

And further:

  • 1 more egg, beaten
  • red food coloring
  • 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar
  • a few drops of water
  • almonds, for the 'nails'
  • cinnamon powder, for decoration

Make sure the butter is at room temperature. Mix the icing sugar with the butter until creamy. Then add the egg and mix until the egg is completely absorbed.

Now add the wheat flour and the essence and knead the mixture into a smooth dough. Then cover the dough with plastic wrap and put it in the freezer for at least fifteen minutes. Now take the dough out of the freezer and make into balls, the size of a walnut. Knead each ball into a finger.

With the back of a knife, cut small stripes where the knuckles are. Then put the almonds in a pan with water and bring them to a boil.

When the mixture has boiled for a while, drain the water and remove the brown skins from the almonds. Then split the almonds in half lengthwise. Cover each biscuit with a thin layer of beaten egg and put half an almond on the end as a nail.

Now preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Place the cookies on a baking tray and bake them for about 12-15 minutes until golden and golden. Then smear some of the (dry!) ​​cinnamon powder with a brush on the place where the knuckles are.

To make the fake blood, mix the powdered sugar with the dye and a few drops of water. The mixture should be spreadable, but not too thin. Smear a little of the fake blood on the back of each cookie with a brush. Then go with the brush along the almond.
