An easy (and quick!) snack that is indispensable at every Antillean party: the cheese ball. Grated cheese is mixed with flour and eggs to make a firm dough. This dough is fried in balls to form our traditional 'cheese ball'. The balls are served hot, usually on a skewer.

Can you freeze Antillean cheese balls?

Question #1 on our website is “can you freeze the cheese balls?” – the answer to that question is a resounding YES! You can make the dough of the Antillean cheese balls in advance and roll the balls in advance. The balls can then be stored 'raw' in the freezer. The moment you want to eat the cheese balls, you can fry them directly from the freezer in hot oil.

One thing you really shouldn't do is keep the raw balls (or dough) in the fridge. When you do that, the dough will dry slightly and the cheese balls may crack when you bake them. The baking powder in the dough allows the balls to expand and when the dough becomes too dry, it can no longer tolerate this.

Birthday or party

For the Dutch it is something very familiar to serve cubes of cheese on a birthday. We are happy to adopt that tradition, but just a little differently. The Antillean cheese balls taste like delicious, mature Gouda cheese – but everyone will immediately realize that you have made extra effort for your guests by making these snacks.

You can use our recipe to make a large bowl of Antillean cheese balls… at least about 50 pieces. They are (of course!) best served immediately, while they are still hot. But even when they have cooled down, they are still fine to eat. Maybe you like to serve it with a dipping sauce… based on mustard, for example?

Enjoy!
