The tastiest (healthy!) Iced coffee

door Linda Terrizzi

Now that it's so hot, a cup of hot coffee every now and then doesn't seem like a good plan. But hey, I get it… we all want ours anyway 'caffeine fix'so that we can continue to function properly. What could be better than a good glass of iced coffee?

the 'iced latte' of 'Frappuccino' – whatever you call it: coffee is also irresistibly delicious ice cold!

Iced coffee from the store

You can of course buy these drinks. But there are two huge drawbacks to this. First, an iced coffee from the store is quite expensive. Nice for once, but not every day, and certainly not if you want one with five people at the same time.

The second drawback is also not unimportant: iced coffee is often stiff from the cream and sweet syrup. And that really hits in terms of calories. A typical iced coffee from the store (Starbucks, HEMA) can easily contain more than 500 calories.

It's such a shame to get them in like that. My wife always says: “I'd rather eat a piece of cake for that!” By comparison, a glass of our iced coffee contains only about 50 calories. So that is -indeed- a tenth!

Homemade iced coffee

Hence our recipe for a reasonably healthy iced coffee. This way you can enjoy a glass every day and both your wallet and your sugar level will thank you afterwards.

When you eat vegan or low carbohydrate, you can make some (small) adjustments regarding the milk or sweetener. This is also a great basic recipe for iced coffee.

I'll add right away: I'm married to an Italian, so they usually like VERY strong coffee. After 15 years of marriage, I've gotten used to this a bit too. This iced coffee is therefore also extra tasty and not as 'milky' and sweet as the iced coffee from the store. If you like that better: just experiment with the amount of milk and sugar. You really can't go wrong!

This recipe is for 2 glasses of iced coffee. For more or less, you can double / halve the recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of strong (espresso) coffee, about 80 ml in total
  • 2 tsp sugar (to taste!)
  • 16 ice cubes
  • 100 ml of whole milk

Also needed: a strong blender. Do you have a blender, but is it not that strong? Then buy in the supermarket 'crushed ice'. That is much easier for the device to process than the entire ice cubes.

Iced coffee preparation:

Make the coffee and dissolve the sugar while it is still hot. Then let the coffee cool down to room temperature.

Take the cup from the blender and put the ice cubes in it. Then pour the milk and the sweetened coffee over it.

Turn on the blender and grind the whole in about 30-50 seconds until smooth and creamy. You can now optionally choose to add more milk, sugar or even a nice coffee syrup (but you don't have to!)

Serve the iced coffee in a tall glass with a straw. Drink tasty!
