Hondel / Antillean snack

In recent years we have often been asked about the recipe for the famous Antillean dog. The Hondel is a kind of spring roll, but with a filling of, among other things, a sausage and sauerkraut.

So it is clearly a nice mix of cultures: you will find the Dutch sauerkraut (with sausage) in it, but then rolled up and fried 'in the Eastern way'.



Yet it is not as simple as 'just' rolling a sausage and sauerkraut in a spring roll wrapper, because hey… we want TASTE! That is why the sauerkraut is first firmly seasoned and fried before it is processed in the dog.

Ingredients

In addition to (of course!) Sauerkraut and frankfurters, this Antillean snack also includes eggs, breadcrumbs and a lot of spices. They also use ready-made spring roll sheets. Very handy!

Would you rather make everything yourself? Then you can first bake pancakes and use them to make the dog. Due to the use of egg, the edges stick together well and will not open when the snacks are fried.

That is also very nice, because the seasoned sauerkraut can ruin your cooking oil well when it is released during baking. Of course we want to prevent that.
