Banana and orange milkshake (batido)

door Linda Terrizzi

In the Antilles we like to drink a 'batido' when the weather is warm (and let's face it: the weather is always warm there!). That's our milkshake. In fact, it's a cross between a milkshake and a smoothie.

The basis of a good batido is fresh, frozen fruit. Tasty pieces of banana and orange, in this case.

Smoothie or milkshake?

And a salesperson will always ask you the question after choosing your favorite type of fruit: "Will you add milk and sugar?" If not: then you have a tasty, healthy fruit smoothie that only contains frozen fruit and ice cubes.

If so: then a mixture of condensed milk and sugar goes in and you get a delicious milkshake. Just what you like best!

By the way, the condensed milk used in the batidos is not the same as the sweetened condensed milk we often use in desserts and cakes. It's more like a slightly thickened 'coffee creamer' sold in 400ml cans.

We use this condensed milk instead of fresh milk. The reason for this is, of course, simple: (almost) no fresh milk is produced in the Antilles, so it is very expensive there. It is also not convenient because of the outside temperature; when you come home with your carton of milk, it is already sour. That is why we use this easy (but slightly less tasty) canned milk more often.

In the Netherlands, milk is of course available everywhere, so we prefer fresh, whole milk in this recipe.

Tip for vegans: The batido also tastes delicious with vegetable milk (soy milk, rice milk or oat milk)!

Also on Antilliaans-eten.nl I occasionally post one recipe for such a batido. Simply because batidos are delicious… because they are healthy… and because they are so easy to make! This shake is a real classic, the batido of orange and banana:

This recipe is for 4 glasses

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 bananas, frozen and in pieces
  • the juice of 2 oranges
  • 400 ml of whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • a few drops of vanilla essence

PREPARATION OF THE BATIDO:

Take a blender or use a hand blender with matching cup.

Squeeze the oranges into the cup.

Add the pieces of frozen banana

Now add the milk, sugar and essence and let it mix well for about 1 minute.

Drink tasty!

Tip: Always keep a container in the freezer with different pieces of fruit. If you have fruit that is starting to ripen, cut it into pieces and put it in. This way you always have something for a nice batido, and you don't have to use ice to cool it. (Ice can make the batido watery!)

This recipe can also be found in our cookbook 'The complete Antillean kitchen'. Did you know that there are no less than 300 (!) recipes in that book from the kitchen of Aruba, Bonaire en Curaçao?

It is the result of 7 years of research and we now finally dare to say that we have really “captured” Antillean cuisine in its entirety. Click on the image below to learn more about the book:
